Israeli Official Explains Deadly North Gaza Strike
An airstrike on a residential building in Beit Lahia, northern Gaza, which killed at least 110 people on Tuesday, according to figures from Gaza’s Ministry of Health, targeted an individual acting suspiciously on the roof, an Israeli military official told ABC News.
The official added that they were unaware of the many people inside, as prior evacuation orders had already been issued in the area.
The official expressed doubts about the death toll reported by Gaza’s Ministry of Health, a view also reflected in a public statement from the Israel Defense Forces regarding the strike.
U.S. State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller called the incident a "horrifying event with a horrifying outcome."
Emergency responders reported that the airstrike struck a five-story building sheltering displaced families, with at least 25 children among the deceased. Officials noted that many people remain unaccounted for.
